In Bexar County, Sheriff Javier Salazar is facing competition from Nathan Buchanan. The challenger, a peace officer who has described himself as a business owner, has signed the Texas First Pledge.

There are currently secessionist movements active in 12 U.S. states campaigning either for full independence, to form a new state or to merge with an existing state, according to one self-styled "self-determination advocate."

A leading Texan nationalist has called for the Lone Star State to field its own Olympic team and suggested Texas could one day host the Olympics as a fully independent nation, with Bull Riding included in the events.
