The Texit movement within the great State of Texas has never been stronger. As a matter of fact, Texas is the first US state in modern history to gain the support we need to fully secede. The road to independence is not without obstacles, though.
Even with BREXIT as a modern example, pro-independence Texans still do not have a map to follow toward independence. Without clear-cut guidelines or avenues to pursue, the already long road to independence can seem even longer, if not impossible. Not all hope is lost, though.
Through the TNM and with the help of pro-independence Texans, there are steps we can take as a united front to secure independence.
The First Step To Independence
The first step in becoming an independent nation the union is to hold a referendum allowing the citizens of Texas to make the decision for themselves. Polling numbers have already shown that the same percentage of Texans supporting independence is equal to, if not higher, that of the British, Scottish, and Catalonians before their referendums.
So why hasn’t mainstream media picked up on this topic? Why haven’t there been any legitimate, respective steps toward holding a referendum?
The biggest obstacle standing in the way of Texit is the false narrative imposed by pro-federal propaganda. They would like you to believe the movement is only a small minority of Texas when that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The majority is being bullied into silence by a vocal minority.
Welcome To Atomization
In Gene Sharp’s book From Dictatorship to Democracy, he labels this phenomenon ‘atomization’. The idea behind it is, if a regime can convince its opponents that they are alone or insignificant in their beliefs, they become effectively neutralized.
This is the metaphorical ditch Texit currently finds itself stuck in. Its supporters are often ridiculed or called “un-American”, driving them to hide their beliefs and stomping out any kind of unity among supporters.
Nonetheless, pro-independence Texans have never been more abundant or more resistant to these kinds of superficial attacks. Naysayers of the Texit movement can only attack with ridicule and mockery, as opposed to substantive arguments on policy. This momentum, coupled with recent political successes and high-profile activism from leading proponents of Texit, has created a stronger and more resilient movement than ever before.
How to Strengthen The Texit Movement and Bring About A Referendum
Yet even with increasing support, it always seems we are standing at the door of Texit, but unable to open it. So how do we open that door? What can we do to strengthen the movement and fight for our independence?
The biggest and most important answer to that question is to organize. Organize, organize, organize. One of the biggest internal problems the Texit community faces is that many supporters are isolated and disconnected from one another. Without organization and communication, Texit is left vulnerable to being attacked or dismissed by opposers in Washington and the State Capitol.
An example of this was in 2011 when State Representative Leo Berman agreed to file an independence bill. It was quickly shot down by Texas Speaker of the House, Joe Straus. Straus gave Berman an ultimatum, “If you file the independence bill, none of your immigration bills will see the light of day in this session.”
Consequently, Berman decided not to file his bill and the possibility of independence disappeared. Since then, however, support of the Texit movement has grown among Texans, and that situation could have played out very differently in today’s political climate.
Had Texit supporters at the time been politically engaged at a sufficient level, Straus would not have been Speaker of the House, and pro-independence legislators would have made up the House majority. Therefore, Texans would have at least been given the chance to vote on independence.
How to Get a Pro-Independence Majority Into the Texas State Legislature
How can we get to the point of a pro-independence majority in the Texas State Legislature?
First and foremost, pro-independence Texans need to unite entirely around the idea of Texit. The only way to achieve this is by voting only for candidates that are supportive of independence, regardless of their political affiliation. This would require independence supporters to forgo the usual political divisions and partisan politics, and make this their one and only voting issue.
Taking Action and On-The-Ground Activism
The next step in the process of reaching a referendum would require Texit supporters to take action. Anyone can slap a “SECEDE” bumper sticker on their car or “LIKE” a pro-independence post on Facebook, but in order for Texas to gain independence, it’s going to take much more than bumper sticker activism.
It’s going to take on-foot activism. People like you going door to door, educating others on the need for independence. Without full support on all sides of the political spectrum, the Texit movement will never gain the traction it needs to demand a full referendum.
The Road to Texit Will Take Hard Work and Determination
It’s also important to note that this won’t happen overnight, it’s going to take time and energy. The Scottish National Party was formed in 1934 yet it wasn’t until 2014 that independence was voted upon. In the UK, it took nearly 42 years of pushing until they finally held a referendum in 2016.
In contrast, the modern movement for Texas Independence can only trace its roots back to 1996, and TNM came around in 2005. When compared to other successful independence movements around the world, Texit is still in its infancy.
Clearly there is still much work to do and many kinks to work out. However, the Texas Nationalist Movement has never been stronger or more prepared to fight for independence. The most important thing you can do as a supporter of this movement is to unite pro-independence Texans around TNM and Texit. You have to be willing to do the in-person work required to advance the movement for independence throughout the state. Challenge the opposers and know that you are not alone. With that, I leave you with the immortalized words laid out in the Constitution by our forefathers.
“That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
