Trump’s Reckoning and Texas’ Path to Real Independence

With the stroke of a pen, President Donald Trump has delivered a series of executive orders aimed squarely at dismantling federal policies that he and his supporters see as overreach. Texans, by and large, have welcomed these moves. Many view them as a much-needed gut punch to a bloated and overreaching federal system that has long trampled on state sovereignty. But history has shown that what is done by executive order can just as easily be undone by executive order. So the question remains: will Trump’s changes last, and more importantly, should Texas even concern itself with the answer?

Texans have never been enthusiastic about federal control. Whether it’s mandates from Washington or power-grabbing agencies, the state has long resisted any attempts to infringe upon its independence. Trump’s actions, which include withdrawing from international agreements, cutting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs from federal agencies, and rolling back immigration policies, align closely with the values of those who champion Texas independence. These measures have been interpreted as a long-overdue reckoning—a moment in which federal authority is finally being put in check. But Texans must recognize that these efforts are ultimately band-aids on a system that is fundamentally broken beyond repair.

The problem with executive orders is their impermanence. The moment the political tides turn, they can be wiped away just as easily as they were implemented. This makes legislative action critical, but Texans must ask themselves—why continue playing this rigged game? Why hope that a temporary federal administration will respect Texas’ sovereignty when history has shown time and time again that Washington’s interests always come first? Some Texas Republicans in Congress are pushing bills to solidify Trump’s executive orders, but what Texans truly need is to be free from this federal circus altogether.

Beyond Congress, another challenge looms: the entrenched federal bureaucracy. Career bureaucrats, many of whom are deeply invested in the old system, will obstruct and resist any real change. Agencies have long found ways to sidestep executive orders or delay their implementation, making any federal reform short-lived at best. This administrative resistance is just another symptom of why Texas must forge its own path rather than continue to beg for scraps from Washington’s table.

Then there is the judiciary. The courts have a long history of stepping in when executive actions are challenged, often to the detriment of Texas. Legal fights over Trump’s policy shifts have already begun, with opponents seeking to block them on constitutional grounds. For example, his move to end birthright citizenship through executive order has sparked lawsuits, with legal scholars arguing that such a change requires a constitutional amendment. If the courts rule against him, his orders will be rendered moot, regardless of their popular support. But why should Texas be forced to rely on the whims of an unelected judiciary to determine its future?

Texans must also consider the long-term implications of staying within the federal system. Even if Trump’s changes endure for a time, history shows that political tides shift. If Washington swings back toward policies that erode state sovereignty, Texans will find themselves once again at the mercy of bureaucrats, politicians, and judges who do not have Texas’ best interests at heart.

The federal government’s continued expansion of power—whether under Republican or Democrat leadership—only serves to prove that Texas’ independence is the only lasting solution. Texans should use this period to galvanize support for a complete break from federal control, ensuring that future generations are not subjected to the political whims of Washington.

The real question Texans should be asking is not whether Trump’s changes will last, but whether Texas will continue to allow its fate to be determined by an increasingly hostile federal government. The answer lies in action, not waiting for Washington to do right by Texas. The midterm elections provide a small window of opportunity for Texas nationalists to build momentum, but true sovereignty will only be achieved when Texas takes the necessary steps to reclaim its independence once and for all. The time for hoping that Washington will change is over. The only way to ensure Texas’ freedom is to remove ourselves from the federal system entirely.

Texans must realize that the so-called reckoning happening in Washington is fleeting. The only reckoning that truly matters is the one that leads to Texas standing as a free and independent nation. Now is the time for action. We must push forward, ensuring that Texas controls its own future rather than being beholden to a dysfunctional and overreaching federal system. The road to independence is not without challenges, but the alternative—remaining under Washington’s thumb—is no longer acceptable. The time has come for Texas to stand on its own.
