The Global Independence Wave and Why TEXIT Matters More Than Ever

When analyzing global political trends, one fact becomes increasingly clear – the world is experiencing an unprecedented wave of independence movements. From Greenland’s arctic shores to Catalonia’s Mediterranean coast, populations are reasserting their fundamental right of self-government in numbers not seen since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The data tells a compelling story. Since 1945, the number of internationally recognized countries has nearly quadrupled, growing from 54 to nearly 200. Dozens more independence movements are actively seeking recognition, with several poised to achieve statehood within the next decade. This trend shows no signs of slowing. In fact, it’s accelerating.

Understanding this global context is crucial for Texas. Every successful independence movement provides valuable lessons and establishes precedents that strengthen Texas’s path to self-government. More importantly, these movements demonstrate that the dissolution of political unions is a natural and ongoing process in world history.

Greenland

Greenland’s push for independence from Denmark offers particularly relevant insights for Texas. Currently, Greenland’s parliament is establishing a commission to define parameters for an independence referendum, which must occur before April 2025. Recent polling shows 64% of Greenlanders consider independence “fairly important,” though concerns about economic viability have kept support for immediate independence around 38%.

Like Texas, Greenland possesses significant natural resources that could sustain an independent nation. Their strategic location and mineral wealth have attracted international attention, particularly from the United States and China. This mirrors Texas’s position as an energy powerhouse with strategic importance to North American security. However, Greenland’s movement also highlights a crucial difference that strengthens Texas’s position. While Greenland must develop its resources before achieving true independence, Texas already has a fully developed, diverse economy ranking tenth globally. The economic hurdles that give Greenlanders pause simply don’t exist for Texas.

Scotland

Scotland’s continued push for independence after Brexit provides another instructive example. Despite winning 48% support in their 2014 referendum, the Scottish independence movement has gained strength rather than fading away. Brexit fundamentally altered Scotland’s relationship with the UK, leading to increased support for independence, particularly among EU supporters, from 44% in 2016 to 57% by late 2020.

The UK Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling that Scotland cannot hold a referendum without London’s consent mirrors arguments made against Texas independence. However, this ruling inadvertently strengthens the case for independence by exposing the fundamental contradiction in claiming to be a democracy while denying populations the right to vote on self-government.

California

Within the United States, California’s “Calexit” movement offers interesting parallels to TEXIT. A new initiative has been cleared for signature gathering, requiring 546,651 signatures by July 2024. If successful, it would create a commission to study California’s viability as an independent nation and place independence on the 2028 ballot. While California’s vision for independence differs drastically from Texas’s – they seek to centralize power while we aim to decentralize it – their movement highlights crucial facts about state independence. California’s economy ranks fifth globally, ahead of India and the United Kingdom. This economic reality demolishes arguments that American states are “too integrated” to function independently.

Alberta and Quebec

North of our border, Canada provides a real-time example of how federal systems fail diverse regions. Alberta’s passage of the Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act allows the province to resist federal laws deemed harmful to Alberta’s interests, particularly in areas like natural resources, gun control, healthcare, and education. Meanwhile, Quebec’s sovereignty movement has gained renewed momentum, with the Bloc Québécois potentially forming the official Opposition in 2025’s federal election. Quebec’s movement demonstrates how distinct cultural identity and economic interests can persist despite centuries of political union.

And More

Beyond these high-profile examples, independence movements are gaining traction worldwide. Catalonia’s push for independence from Spain, despite Madrid’s attempts at suppression, continues to draw millions of supporters. Flanders’ growing separation from Belgium highlights how even the heart of the European Union isn’t immune to independence sentiment.

These movements share common drivers. Economic disparities between regions and central governments often spark initial independence sentiment. Cultural identity preservation frequently fuels sustained support. Response to centralized authority overreach galvanizes popular will, while control over natural resources provides economic incentive. Demographic shifts often accelerate these trends.

The success of independence movements typically depends on several key factors working in concert. Economic viability forms the foundation, while international recognition provides legitimacy. Constitutional frameworks ensure stability, popular support provides momentum, and favorable geopolitical circumstances create opportunities for success.

When measured against these criteria, Texas’s position is stronger than any current independence movement. Texas maintains the tenth largest economy globally, leads in energy production, supports a diverse industrial base, operates an independent power grid, and maintains multiple international ports. The state’s existing constitution and governmental institutions provide a ready-made framework for self-governance, while its independent legal system and state military forces offer crucial infrastructure for independence.

Recent developments have only strengthened Texas’s position. The federal government’s debt has exceeded $36 trillion, threatening long-term economic stability. Failed federal immigration policies have created unprecedented border challenges while demanding Texas bear the costs. Federal energy policies threaten Texas industries while making America increasingly dependent on foreign energy sources.

Recent successful independence movements have established important precedents that benefit Texas. The Scottish referendum established that independence votes in Western democracies can be conducted peacefully and fairly. Brexit demonstrated that even deeply integrated economies can separate when political will exists. Kosovo’s recognition by major powers showed that new states can quickly gain international legitimacy when conditions warrant. The UK’s exit from the EU created templates for managing complex political separations.

Understanding these global trends and precedents is crucial for advancing TEXIT. Successful independence movements offer templates for constitutional and legal processes. Transition plans from other movements can inform Texas’s approach to currency, trade, and international agreements. Campaign successes and failures in other regions provide valuable lessons for TEXIT advocacy, while growing acceptance of self-determination movements creates a favorable environment for Texas independence.

The global independence wave carries several immediate implications for Texas. The current international environment increasingly favors independence movements, particularly for economically viable regions. Success requires building broad coalitions across demographic and political lines, as demonstrated by successful movements elsewhere. Detailed planning for post-independence governance maintains public confidence, while early outreach to potential allied nations smooths the transition to independence.

The global independence wave isn’t just making TEXIT possible – it’s making it inevitable. Every successful independence movement strengthens the precedent for peaceful political separation and self-determination. Texas, with its strong economy, distinct culture, and established institutions, is better positioned than any current independence movement to achieve successful self-government.

The question facing Texans isn’t whether independence is possible – the evidence clearly shows it is. The question is whether we’ll achieve independence through a controlled, democratic process or wait until external circumstances force our hand. The global trends suggest that maintaining the status quo indefinitely isn’t an option.

Current international developments have created an unprecedented opportunity for Texas independence. The success of TEXIT now depends on Texans understanding these trends and acting decisively to secure their right to self-government while conditions remain favorable.
