Legislators are being forced to choose sides in the debate over a TEXIT vote. One East Texas legislator is signaling that he plans to stand with the people.
Since the filing of HB 1359, the Texas Independence Referendum Act, by State Representative Kyle Biedermann, legislators have been flooded with calls of support from their constituents.
State Representative James White (HD-19) took to social media on Wednesday to let his constituents know that he plans to stand with the people.
In his post on Facebook, Representative White reminded everyone that the “People of Tx have always reserved (the) discretion” to TEXIT. “Of course, I support the People voting on something as fundamental as who should govern as sovereign.”
White went on to say that, “I love the USA!!!” He continued by quoting the Article 1 Section 1 of the Texas Constitution which declares Texas to be “a free and independent state” and reminds the U.S. that the “perpetuity of the union depend(s) upon the preservation of the right of local self-government…”
He then followed it up with the words of Article 1 Section 2 which reserves to the people of the Texas the “inalienable right to alter, reform or abolish their government in such manner as they may think expedient.”
His parting comment was a reminder that the Republican Party of Texas “names the right to secede as a plank in the party platform.”
Representative White, while not taking a position on TEXIT itself, has definitely made his intention clear to support the right of the people to debate and vote on it. We’re looking forward to seeing White add his name as a co-author of Biedermann’s legislation.
Give Representative White’s office a call and urge him to sign on to HB 1359 as a co-author at 512-463-0490.
